20 Questions With Katie Traviglia, Director of HR and Business Administration, Classic Vacations

Katie Traviglia is the director of human resources and business administration at Classic Vacations, a luxury travel supplier. She’s also a Women Leading Travel & Hospitality member! In this member spotlight, we asked Katie a series of questions about both her professional role and personal life, including the woman who inspires her, her leadership style, her advice for the next generation of female leaders, and much more.

  1. What’s the best book you’ve read recently?
I’m currently reading “The Advantage” by Patrick Lencioni. It’s been transformative for my approach to leadership, especially in nurturing a healthy organizational culture, which is key in a remote work environment.
  2. What do you love most about the travel and hospitality industry?
Its incredible power to connect people and create unforgettable experiences. Every day, we’re helping people live out their dreams — whether it’s a honeymoon, an adventure, or a relaxing escape on a beach. I’m passionate about supporting those who make these dreams come true, from our dedicated team to our wonderful partners around the world. Being a part of that magic, even behind the scenes, is what makes this industry so special to me.
  3. What is something the community may be surprised to learn about you?
I originally went to college to become a teacher! I was set on inspiring young minds and shaping future generations, but somewhere along the way I discovered my passion for business and HR. While I may not be in a classroom, I still get to mentor, support and guide others — just on a different stage. It’s funny how life redirects you, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!
  4. What’s the toughest part of being in charge?
Balancing empathy with accountability. I deeply care about my team and want to support them through any challenges, but I also have a responsibility to uphold standards and drive results. It can be challenging to make difficult decisions or hold someone to a high expectation, especially when I know the effort they’re putting in. But I believe that real growth happens when we’re both compassionate and clear, helping each person reach their potential while ensuring the success of the team as a whole.
  5. What personal skill or attribute do you believe is most responsible for your success?
I believe my ability to connect with people on a genuine level is the key to my success. Whether it’s understanding the needs of my team, building trust with partners, or supporting someone through a challenging situation, I’m committed to being fully present and empathetic. That authentic connection fosters a strong, collaborative culture where everyone feels valued and motivated which, in turn, drives the success of the whole team.
  6. What woman inspires you right now and why?
Right now, I’m truly inspired by Melissa Krueger, our CEO, and the incredible women on the Classic Vacations leadership team. Melissa’s vision and dedication to the travel industry have created a dynamic culture that encourages each of us to push boundaries, think creatively, and stay grounded in our purpose. Her leadership, along with the strength and resilience of the women I work alongside, motivates me daily. They remind me of the power of collaboration, empathy and passion in driving real impact and growth — qualities I aspire to bring to my own role. I also really love Brené Brown for her courage in exploring vulnerability. Her insights on connection and leadership resonate deeply with me.
  7. What is one industry trend you’re closely tracking and why?
I’m closely monitoring the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in the travel industry. AI is revolutionizing how we plan and experience travel, from personalized recommendations to efficient customer service. In addition, AI can support so many aspects of our business. Understanding and leveraging these advancements is crucial for us to stay competitive and continue delivering exceptional, personalized experiences to our clients.
  8. What is one thing you look for when interviewing a job candidate?
Authenticity. I want to see their genuine passion for the role and for the travel industry, as well as a willingness to learn and grow. Skills and experience are important, but a person’s character and enthusiasm are what truly make them a great addition to the team. Authenticity shines through in how they talk about their experiences and challenges, and it helps me see how they’ll connect with our team and clients.
  9. What’s something that you learned about yourself in the past year?
The importance of adaptability and resilience. Navigating unexpected changes, both in the industry and in life, has shown me that I’m stronger and more flexible than I thought. I’ve realized that embracing change with an open mind can lead to new opportunities and personal growth. It’s a lesson I now carry into every challenge, knowing that I can adapt and find a way forward, no matter the circumstances
  10. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
“Lead with empathy, but don’t shy away from accountability.” This guidance has shaped my approach to leadership, reminding me that a balance of compassion and responsibility is essential. It’s about understanding and supporting others while holding everyone, including myself, to high standards. This advice has helped me build stronger relationships and foster a culture where people feel valued and motivated to give their best.
  11. What values are most important to you as a leader?
As a leader, integrity, empathy and growth are the values I hold closest. Integrity is essential because I believe that trust is the foundation of any successful team, and that starts with being honest and accountable. Empathy allows me to connect with my team on a meaningful level, understanding their challenges and celebrating their successes. And growth — both personal and professional — is a value that keeps us all moving forward, striving to be better every day. These values help create a positive, supportive environment where everyone feels empowered to reach their full potential.
  12. What’s the most important thing people should know about you?
That I’m deeply committed to supporting and uplifting others. Whether it’s my team, colleagues or clients, I’m passionate about helping people succeed and find fulfillment. I believe that when we invest in each other’s growth and well-being, we create a stronger, more positive environment for everyone. This commitment is at the heart of everything I do and drives me to continually improve and make a difference. Watching others succeed is a core part of my fulfillment.
  13. Do you prefer to work in the office, at home, or hybrid? Why?
I prefer working remotely, as it allows for flexibility and productivity, especially in a 100 percent remote company like ours. Working from home enables me to maintain a healthy work-life balance while staying fully connected to my team through technology. It’s rewarding to see how well we can collaborate and innovate from different locations. I believe this setup fosters a sense of trust and empowerment among everyone on the team.
  14. Where is your favorite place you’ve traveled to? Why?
Greece, especially Santorini. There’s something magical about the stunning views of the Aegean Sea, the beautiful sunsets, and the vibrant culture. The island’s mix of history, breathtaking scenery, and warm hospitality left a lasting impression on me. It’s a place where you can truly disconnect, soak in the beauty, and feel connected to something timeless. Every time I think back to my trip there, it reminds me of the power of travel to rejuvenate and inspire.
  15. What’s the top item on your bucket list?
To explore Italy from top to bottom! I’d love to wander through the historic streets of Rome, experience the art and architecture of Florence, and relax along the stunning Amalfi Coast. Italy’s rich history, vibrant culture, and incredible cuisine have always fascinated me. I dream of indulging in authentic pasta and gelato, visiting ancient ruins, and taking in the breathtaking countryside. It would be an unforgettable journey, immersing myself in a place where history and beauty come together so seamlessly.
  16. What do you do to recharge?
I love spending quality time with my family and dogs, enjoying the simple joys of being together. Whether it’s taking a relaxing walk, watching a favorite movie, or having a casual get-together with friends, these moments fill me with energy and remind me of what’s most important. I also find peace in spending time outdoors or diving into a good book — anything that lets me disconnect and reset so I can return to work feeling refreshed and inspired.
  17. What is your biggest accomplishment?
Balancing my role as a mom and Marine Corps wife with my career in a way that brings out the best in all aspects of my life. Being a mother has taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of nurturing, while supporting my husband in the Marine Corps has instilled a deep appreciation for strength and adaptability. Through it all, my love for my work and my commitment to making a difference have kept me driven. Juggling these roles isn’t always easy, but each has shaped me into a stronger, more compassionate leader, and I’m incredibly proud of that.
  18. What advice would you give to the next generation of female leaders?
Embrace the power of listening. Truly listening — rather than simply waiting to respond — opens doors to understanding, empathy, and stronger connections with those you lead. In a world that often encourages us to be the loudest voice in the room, sometimes the greatest strength lies in listening more and talking less. By absorbing different perspectives, you build trust, gain insight, and make better decisions. Combine that with confidence in your own voice and a commitment to continuous growth, and you’ll be an unstoppable force.
  19. What gets you up in the morning?
A blend of faith, family and purpose. My faith gives me a sense of gratitude and strength to start each day with a positive outlook. My love for my family and my passion for the work I do keep me motivated and grounded, knowing that each day is an opportunity to make a difference. And, of course, my fur babies — who are also my enthusiastic “alarm clocks” — are there every morning to remind me that every day is a fresh start filled with love and joy.
  20. What do you like most about being a member of Women Leading Travel & Hospitality?
The opportunity to learn from so many incredible people. Being part of a larger community of inspiring women gives me fresh perspectives and valuable insights that I carry into my work every day. It’s empowering to connect with others who share a passion for the travel industry and are so open to sharing their knowledge and experiences.
