During a recent webinar hosted by Women Leading Travel & Hospitality and its sister brand, Women in Retail Leadership Circle, executive coach Jennifer Thornton discussed how to create a culture of innovation by identifying and reworking some limiting beliefs we hear or tell ourselves during the workday.
Thornton, founder of 304 Coaching, believes we can expand our mind map by pushing our boundaries past the limiting beliefs that we absorb every day. Here are three that we often hear:
1. “I’ve made too many mistakes.”
A great way to acknowledge this limiting belief, Thornton said, is by reframing the narrative to show someone what’s possible. Thornton suggests responding by saying something like, “Let’s talk about what you’ve learned from those mistakes.”
2. “I’m not good enough for what you’ve asked me to do.”
Thornton said a leader’s goal should be to get their colleague or staff member out of this mindset. Saying something like, “I know this is new for you, but you’ve shown in the past you’re good at figuring out new things,” can help.
3. “I know I’ve disappointed you.”
Reframing the conversation to give a colleague a different perspective is useful. “I’m never disappointed when someone tries something new” is one suggested response.
When you access the webinar on-demand, you’ll get Thornton’s free workbook with tips on having conversations like these that expand employees’ thinking. The workbook will help you implement your new knowledge on limiting beliefs and encourage you to apply what you’ve learned in real life.
“You as a leader can change the conversation,” Thornton said.
