We recently asked 10 Women Leading Travel & Hospitality members for a tip for productively leading a remote or hybrid team. Here’s what they shared:
“Keep in touch daily using communication platforms like Microsoft Teams where a quick chat or question can be easily and quickly sent. Also, use video during scheduled calls to keep engaged and promote collaboration. Being able to look at each other in the eyes and really listening is immeasurable.” — Angela Galeziowski, vice president of sales, strategy and support, Extended Stay America Hotels
“Having weekly team meetings, including video team meetings, in addition to one-to-one touch-bases are great to feel most connected to your team. Also, plan time to get together when you can for outside-of-work activities. It’s good to take good notes on what your team likes individually so you can personalize your conversations and any interactions you have with them.” — Amy Faber, director, business support services for meetings and incentives, Signet Jewelers
“Making time for fun, such as a Zoom happy hour, playing a virtual game, having lunch together, and enjoying being together in a fun environment.” — Amanda Kenning, senior manager, hospitality sales, WhyHotel
“Remember to take some time for yourself. Take that walk. It’s OK to step away.” — Kris Endreson, vice president of strategic sales, MSC Cruises USA
“Live each day with positive intentions towards your team. Surprise someone with a special note.” — Lacy Peterson, general manager, The Glass Light Hotel & Gallery
“Communication and trust. During these unprecedented times, everyone has been challenged with their personal life along with work life. We don’t have a lot of hybrid positions, but when a team member needs to work from home, we support it and are very understanding.” — Nicole Eutsey, vice president of operations, Century Hospitality
“Make it easy for the team to know, and track activity with, top target accounts and activities. So many tools make this easy. It also doesn’t hurt to make the productivity transparent to all; many people are fueled by a little competition.” — Angela Shannon, operations director, Travelzoo
“Find ways to connect with your team. Our team does a call every morning on Microsoft Teams to connect the office team and the remotes. We make it fun with trivia/fun facts and celebrate events in each other’s lives.” — Christie Hinkle, senior sales manager, Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company
“Find time to make casual connection online with your team like you would in the office — e.g., grabbing a virtual coffee. And make sure your camera is on. It’s important to continue to build relationships, now more than ever.” — Anupa Charles-Pierre, director of global luxury brand marketing, Hilton
“Look for innovative ways to stay connected with the team besides Zoom or email. Showing care through a phone call or a thoughtful gesture can go a long way.” — Ani Nazaryan, senior director of people (HR), The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas
