As part of Women Leading Travel & Hospitality’s 2023 Top Women in Travel & Hospitality report, which features in-depth interviews with leading female executives from across the industry, we asked honorees several questions, including “How do you keep yourself form burning out and stay inspired?” Here are a few of their responses:

“I’m very lucky in that I both work to live and live to work. I love what I do, and I derive great joy from working with my fantastic team and the wider network to drive the company vision. That said, I’m happiest when I’m with my daughter Lily, my husband Jon, and our ever-growing menagerie of rescue cats and dogs. As for balance, anyone who knows me knows that I find my inner ‘chi’ on a spin bike at a hundred miles an hour.” –-Emma Banks, Vice President, F&B Strategy and Development, EMEA, Hilton

“When I’m feeling burned out, I do breathing exercises and turn to things that bring me joy such as cooking, music, theater or time with family.” –Jessica Kimbrough, Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer, United Airlines

“Reading, setting definite ‘work’ hours and ‘my time’ hours, and taking on projects that I’m passionate about so that the work journey is fulfilling and energizing with each advancement you make. One trick I have for inspiration is to constantly look up inspiring quotes. I have about five different books on inspirational quotes. They’re fun and usually give you a ‘boost’ every time you read one.” –Nicole Rogers, Executive Vice President and Chief Sales Officer, San Francisco Travel Association

“I recently hired a health coach to give me new tools and insights in how to balance the stress of work and the toll traveling the majority of time can take on one’s mental and physical health. I love a combination of using my Peloton, walking, strength training, yoga and pilates. I haven’t mastered meditation, but I’m working on it! If you don’t take care of yourself, you will not be at your best for your teams, plus you’re not role modeling the right behavior.” –Tammy Routh, Senior Vice President, Global Sales, Marriott International

“Overseeing the operations of a tour operator can be a 24/7 job, particularly during our peak travel months. Throughout the high season, I stay inspired and try to keep our teams inspired by reading and sharing positive customer feedback. The joy of a positive travel experience can help remind all of us why we do what we do when we’re in the thick of it. When I’m not working, my husband and I love going to see live music, trying new restaurants, sandwich nights with friends, or hanging out with our cats and planning our next adventure.” –Missy Paul, Head of Operations, Vacations by Rail
